This website is based on the printed publication ‘The Cutting Edge – Basic operating skills for the veterinary surgeon’ [2006 ISBN 97809554100] edited by prof. Jolle Kirpensteijn DVM  DipACVS DipECVS and dr. Wim Klein DVM phD DipECVS specialist RNVA. A great read for every veterinarian.

The valuable content is a distillation of the combined professional expertise and teaching experience of a group of exceptional veterinarian colleagues from the Netherlands Veterinary Faculty at Utrecht University. It finds its origins in the Utrecht teaching program in surgery for the professional degree in vet. medicine.

Twelve of its sixteen chapters focus primarily on fundamental principles of veterinary surgery, wound management and patient care. They are clearly written and well illustrated and will provide a useful concise resource for those beginning training. Most of the images will be replaced with high definition video to make it easier to understand certain procedures like operating-, suture – and bandage techniques.

A further four chapters provide an overview of abdominal surgery, fracture management, the external ear and ocular adnexa in both large and small animals.

Operative surgery remains an essential component of much general practice and the outcomes of surgical treatment are critical for the patient. As a veterinarian confident application of sound surgical solutions to animal problems will always be important for our animal patients and their human owners.

All the authors represent a formidable force in veterinary practice, learning and research. Many have been the international public face of the Utrecht Veterinary School. This institute was the first outside the USA, and is still the only one in continental Europe, to be accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association.
